A Faribault man was pronounced dead at the scene of a two-vehicle crash that occurred Tuesday, September 1, along Dodd Boulevard, southwest of Sheildsville, and a Kilkenny man has been hospitalized.
According to a news release issued by Sheriff Troy Dunn, the Rice County Sheriff’s Office, Kilkenny Fire and Rescue and North Ambulance were dispatched to a personal injury vehicle crash in the 8000 Block of Dodd Boulevard at about 1 p.m.

Martha A. Paur, age 78, of Kilkenny, died peacefully at her home on Sunday, August 30, 2020. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 4, 2020. Visitation will be held 2 hours before Mass at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Montgomery from 8:30-10:30 am. Mass will follow at 10:30 with Fr. Tom Niehaus officiating. Burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Montgomery. There will be a luncheon at noon at the American Legion in Montgomery after the burial.

On Tuesday night, the TCU School District announced that it was changing its model for the beginning of the school year.
An email to district families stated the district received additional case number information from Le Sueur County Public Health that supports changing the learning model to grades 1-6 being a hybrid model and the kindergarten remaining in-person every day.
The released stated preschool will follow kindergarten and remain in person on all planned days, and students in grades 7-12 will remain on their original hybrid schedule.

Three games and three big wins for the DRS amateur baseball teams playing in the Class C State Tournament last weekend.
St. Patrick, Prior Lake, and Union Hill all advanced to the next round with victories.
The Irish defeated Regal, 5-1. Prior Lake scored 11 runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat New Ulm, 13-10. Union Hill picked up a 12-7 win over Avon.
St. Patrick will play Rochester Saturday, Aug. 29 at 2 p.m. in Springfield.
Union Hill will play Lamberton Friday, August 28 at 7:30 p.m. in Springfield.

UPDATE:  Project starting date moved to September 8 due to contractor availability.
Permanent repairs for a failed culvert on Hwy 99 east of Hwy 13 are scheduled to begin on Aug. 31, extending the current detour for a minimum of four additional weeks.
During the installation of a new pipe as part of the long-term fix, traffic will continue to be detoured to Hwy 13 and Hwy 21. Motorists can still access the Montgomery Apple Orchard from the west using Hwy 99 at the Hwy 13 intersection.

Paul Bisek of New Prague, MN died Aug. 24, 2020 at his home.  Mass of Christian Burial is set for September 1, 2020 at 11:00 am at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in New Prague.  A private family visitation will start at 10:00 am on Tuesday at the church.  The public will be invited into the church starting at 10:30 am prior to start of the mass at 11:00 am.  For health and safety, all are encouraged to wear masks.

Emily Christine (Kriha) Moore Vlasak, age 93,  formally of Montgomery, passed away peacefully at Mala Strana Rehabilitation Center and Assisted Living in New Prague, MN, on Sunday, August 23, 2020. 
Emily was born on April 3, 1927, to Thomas and Emma (Rynda) Kriha on the family farm near Heidelberg, Minnesota. The youngest of three daughters, Emily graduated from Montgomery High School. After high school she worked as a secretary at the Montgomery Mill until her marriage on September 7, 1949, to John (Jack) Moore at Most Holy Redeemer Church in Montgomery. 

A Montgomery restaurant temporarily closed its doors to the public on Friday, Aug. 21 due to COVID-19. Subway announced the closure with a sign on its door.

Navy veteran Stephen “Steve” Peter Flicek is American Legion Post #79’s current honoree for their “Thank a Living Veteran” project.
Flicek is the eldest child of Glenn and Marge (Wacholtz) Flicek. He was born on November 16, 1948, in Minneapolis, where his parents lived while Glenn was enrolled at St. Thomas College.

New Prague entered the 10-team Region 3C amateur baseball tournament as the No. 6 seed.
They ended the tournament as the Region 3C Champions.
The Orioles upset No. 3 seed Lonsdale, 3-1, edged No. 2 seed Prior Lake, 5-4, and knocked off No. 1 seed St. Patrick, 3-1, to claim the region's No. 1 seed in the Class C State Tournament.
In the championship game, New Prague scored first with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Rita Ann Way, 84, of Montgomery, died on August 9, 2020, in New Prague.
Funeral services and visitation will be held Friday, Aug. 21, 2020, at Most Holy Redeemer Church. Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m., with a Mass to follow. Officiating will be Father Thomas Neihaus.
Rita was born in Montgomery to Thomas and Anna (Flicek) Moravec on October 11, 1935. She graduated from Montgomery-Lonsdale Schools in 1953.

Bergland, Dawn Marie – Age 59, passed away on August 14, 2020. 
Survived by her great nephew Sean Dakota, who was the light of Dawn’s life and who shared many special moments with her in the garden, cooking, decorating for holidays and scrapbooking.
Also survived by Brother Doug Blaisdell (Cheryl), Sisters Deb Dakota and Deanna Cole (Jim), as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.  Proceeded in death by husband Richard Bergland, Son Nickolas Bergland and Parents.  
A special recognition to her unwavering community for all of their support. 

In a 4-3 split vote, the Tri-City United School Board has finalized how the school year will begin.
TCU School Board member Krista Goettl read the resolution that was chosen by the majority of the board Monday night, which states that all students in pre-K through sixth grade will attend in-person class daily, and students in seventh through 12th grade will follow a hybrid learning model.
According to TCU Superintendent Lonnie Siefert, the chosen learning model was the recommended option by administration.

Testing for COVID-19 has continued with the public health departments in Scott, Le Sueur and Rice counties helping where they can. Reports from the counties and Mala Strana Rehabilitation Center and Assisted Living are as follows.

There will be a race for two seats on the Montgomery City Council on November 3 after filings closed on August 11.
Five residents have officially filed. Incumbents Dennis Lambrecht and Bob Forcelle will be challenged for their council positions by Benjamin Koeppen, Joy N. Svoboda and Bob Taraba.
Incumbent Montgomery Mayor Tom Eisert has also filed for re-election. He is running unopposed.
School Board

On Monday, Aug. 10, the Tri-City United School Board held a special meeting to discuss this fall’s schooling options regarding the current COVID crisis.
According to Super­intendent Lonnie Seifert, when the state released guidelines for districts last week, it gave schools some freedoms, mandates and recommendations. He acknowledged when the governor released guidelines (COVID case numbers per county), the first thought was hybrid for all grades.
