Roman A. Malecha passed away on September 18, 2020, at the age of 80. He was preceded in death by Parents, Albert G and Ludmilla (Havel) Malecha; first wife, Darlene Malecha; brothers and sisters, Lillian Tupy, Helen Novak, Albert, Stanley, Joe, Robert and George Malecha.  
Roman was a man of deep faith who dedicated his life to his family, church, friends and community. Roman attended Bethlehem Academy and Seminary school intending to be a priest, until he met Darlene Horejsi at a wedding dance and decided to take a new path in life. 

On Monday, the Minnesota State High School League board of directors voted to reinstate both the fall football and volleyball seasons this fall.
The decisions came after the league surveyed nearly 400 member schools, most of which wanted to have the seasons played out in the fall rather than a spring “flex season.”
Last month, the league postponed the football and volleyball seasons to spring due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. The league reconsidered the decision after hearing from athletes and families.

Since moving to a new location earlier this year, the farmers market in Lonsdale has seen an increase in business.
“We’ve gotten a lot more traffic compared to last year,” said Cakes by Brenda owner Brenda Hergenroder.
Hergenroder, who is in her first year as organizer of the farmers market, said that last year the market was held in the Lonsdale American Legion parking lot.
When the former organizer and the American Legion decided not to continue the market this year, Hergenroder stepped in to see that Lonsdale continued to have a market.

The TCU Tennis Team lost their first couple of matches of the season, but battled hard to win two games each in their contests against United South Central (USC) and Southwest Christian (SWC).
In the game against USC in Le Center last Thursday, the Titans lost their match 5-2, but Coach Phil Murry said the Titans played well and battled hard for their wins.

St. Patrick won three games this past weekend before dropping their final game of the Class C State Tournament Monday, Sept. 7.
The Irish had their best finish in team history, finishing second in the tournament, losing only one game to Fairmont, 12-0 in seven innings at Springfield.
Union Hill also advanced to the final weekend of play, but were defeated by Young America, 6-0 Saturday, Sept. 5.

The 2020 Be-A-Mazed Corn Maze at the Montgomery Orchard celebrates one of nature’s most enduring stories - the Sandhill Crane!
Scott Wardell said the maze design and condition combine to make the best experience for visitors.
“Visitors will be able to enjoy a maze design that makes its way through six acres of adventure,” Wardell explained. “There are 10 trivia stops focused on facts about the sandhill crane throughout the maze, which has extra wide aisles this year to allow guest to pass without getting to close to each other.”

A public hearing was held Tuesday, Sept. 1 at the Le Sueur County Board Room to make a decision regarding the auditor/treasurer position.
The board notified the public of their intent to make this position an appointed position last month.
After publishing their intent in the legal county newspaper, a public hearing needed to be held.
There were neither written comments nor public comment during the meeting.
The board approved the resolution which will make the county auditor/ treasurer position an appointed position. This will take effect Oct. 2, 2020.

Harvey James Edel, of Kilkenny, MN, 89, died peacefully on September 6, 2020, at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Sept. 11, 2020. Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. with Mass to follow at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Montgomery. Father Tom Niehaus will officiate.
Burial will be held at Trebon Cemetery in Shieldsville Township, Kilkenny, MN.
  The family will be honoring his legacy as a farmer by having a drive-by around his farmstead before the burial.

Donald “Donny” Frank Moravec, 78, of New Prague, formally of Montgomery, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2020, at 11 a.m. at Schoenbauer Funeral Home in Montgomery with visitation held two hours prior.

Summer is over, and students in the area are opening their books/laptops for the return to a new school year, which officially began Tuesday, Sept. 8.
Many students haven’t seen the inside of their schools for six months since the COVID-19 health pandemic sent everyone home to learn virtually last March. Life in the classroom, they are seeing, looks a little different.

Delores C. Reak, age 93, of Le Center (Lake Volney), formally of Montgomery, passed away on August 31, 2020, surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 8, 2020, at Schoenbauer funeral home. Visitation will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and services at 3:30 p.m. with a private burial to follow.

A new, colorful exhibit at Montgomery’s Arts and Heritage Center
The colorful and historic pieces all came together.
A collection of aprons created by apron enthusiast, historian, and renowned storyteller Yvonne Cory of Easton is now on display at the Arts and Heritage Center of Montgomery. The free exhibit will be available for viewing during the center’s regular hours until October 10.

The junior varsity soccer team’s quick start with goals coming early helped them finish with a tie game at their season opener against Jordan on August 27.
Coach Carey Langer said the team’s energy allowed the team to protect their lead until midway through the second half when they gave up back-to-back goals.

Arnold "Buck" Zahratka wasn't quite sure what his family was up to when they told him to scooter himself out onto the sidewalk in front of Traditions of Montgomery on Monday afternoon, August 31--Buck's 95th birthday.
"You want me here?" the Montgomery man good-naturedly questioned.

The DRS amateur baseball teams are doing quite well in the Class C State Tournament after the second weekend of play.
Three of the four teams from the local league are in the round of 16 after wins.
Union Hill pulled off a 2-1, 10 inning win over Region 2 Champion Lamberton Friday, Aug. 28.
St. Patrick defeated Region 5 Champion, 10-1, Saturday, Aug. 29.
Prior Lake knocked off Region 15 Champion, 2-1, Saturday, Aug. 29.
New Prague dropped its first game in the tourney Sunday, Aug. 30, being shut out by Foley, 4-0.
