Adrienne L. Skluzacek, age 87, of New Prague, died suddenly but peacefully of natural causes with her family at her side on Saturday, March 21, 2020 at Mala Strana Assisted Living.  Adrienne was born on November 15, 1932 in Lonsdale to Art G. and Julia (Voracek) Lexa.  She attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School and New Prague High School.  She married Albert J.

Andrea L. Kelnhofer (Annie), 61, beloved wife, best friend and companion for 42 blessed years died peacefully, Sunday, August 16th at home after a long 5 year battle with ALS.  Beloved Mother to our special needs daughter, she sacrificed her career and her needs to raise Alexandra (Allie) L. Kelnhofer into the lovely young lady she is today.  Annie was the embodiment of the Christian concept: Fruit of the Spirit.  Annie brought: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness and gentleness to every life she touched. 

New Prague Area Schools announced today (Monday) that it will start the 2020-21 school year in a hybrid model for grades K-12. The school district came to this decision in consultation with the Minnesota Department of Health and after examining COVID case data for the three counties the school district is located in (Scott, Le Sueur and Rice). In the primary elections on Tuesday, Aug. 11, the two big winners for the Minnesota Senate race were Republican Jason Lewis and Democrat Tina Smith. Lewis garnered 78.13 percent of the vote from his party, beating back four challengers. Incumbent Senator Smith received 87.15 percent of the vote out of five challengers in the Democratic-Farmer-Labor party. Voters will decide between the two in the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Testing for COVID-19 has continued with the public health departments in Scott, Le Sueur and Rice counties helping where they can. Reports from the counties and Mala Strana Rehabilitation Center and Assisted Living are as follows.

Allen Edward Novak, 77 of Mendota, IL, passed away on Monday, August 10, 2020 in his home.
 Allen was born in New Prague, MN on March 20, 1943 to Edward and Goldie (Jahn) Novak.

The New Prague Chamber of Commerce announced in a newsletter on Thursday, Aug. 13, that due to the COVID-19 pandemic they have come up with some unique ways to celebrate the 36th Annual Dožínky Festival and Classic Car Cruise “virtually” from Friday, Sept. 18, through Sunday, Sept. 20. The Chamber will have other things in the days leading up to the virtual celebration. The Chamber said unfortunately the Classic Car Cruise, street dance, and Parade of Farm Pride have officially been cancelled.

Rice County Sheriff Troy Dunn has reported the death of a one-month-old infant in Erin Township.
Dunn said his department received a call on Thursday, Aug. 13 at 5:29 a.m. for an unresponsive baby at a residence on the 14000 block of Shields Lake Trail in Erin Township.

Staff at New Prague’s Coborn’s Marketplace serve people meals to go as part of the store’s Customer Appreciation Dinner on Wednesday, Aug. 12. Held from 3-6 p.m. the drive thru meals were adult dinners that included BBQ pulled pork sandwiches and kids dinners that included hot dogs. In the first hour 59 meals had been served. The meals were cash or check only, with pre-orders and pre-pay of meals available. All proceeds from the meals are to be donated to the Peace Center, New Prague’s food shelf. Applications for local elections for New Prague’s city council and school board closed at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 11. For the New Prague School Board all incumbents filed, plus there was one new name. For the New Prague City Council six people filed for the three seats.
School board incumbents who filled for re-election are Dennis Havlicek, Matthew Goldade, Kim Holden and Jeanne Kubes. Candidate Dan Call added his name to the election. The four seats have terms of four years each.

A voter marks their ballot during the primary election in New Prague the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 11. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, voters are being asked to wear masks. Other changes are that voters are asked to distance by six-feet while they wait in line and to take a pen for filling out their ballots and then drop it off before they leave. The pens, plus voting booths, are sanitized after each voter uses them. New Prague is holding its elections in the gym at the New Prague Fitness and Aquatic Center. Primary elections opened at 7 a.m. and are to remain open until 8 p.m.

Harriet Helen (Turek) Bartyzal, age 85, of Shakopee, MN, entered eternal peace, on Monday, August 10, 2020.  
 A time of gathering will be on Friday, August 14, from 9-10:30 am, at Ballard-Sunder Funeral and Cremation, 833 S. Marschall Road, Shakopee, with a Mass of Christian Burial, at 11 am, at the Church of St. Mark (The Parish of Saints Joachim and Anne), 350 Atwood Street, Shakopee. Live streaming of the Mass will be available by visiting the church website ssjacs.org. A private family burial will be held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.  

Chlan, Evelyn A., age 79 of Webster, passed away on August 8, 2020 peacefully at Northfield Retirement Center.
Evelyn was born July 26, 1941 to Guy and Anna Novak. Preceded in death by son, Jim Jr.; son-in-law, Todd Kniefel; brothers, Albert and Joe Novak. Survived by husband of 61 years, Jim Sr.; children, Jane Kniefel, Bernie, Dan (Tami), Joe (Sheri), and Aggie (Todd) Holliday; daughter-in-law, Donna Chlan; 11 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; sister, Mary (Ed) Bastyr; sister-in-laws, Betty Novak, Glorene Novak and Mary Sirek.

According to a preliminary report from the New Prague Police Department, a Scott County Sheriff’s Deputy and New Prague Police Officer were apparently involved in a struggle with a motorist around 3:57 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 6.
