Joyce F. Madson, age 87, of Lonsdale, passed away June 5, 2024, at Villages of Lonsdale.
Joyce was born December 22, 1936, on the family farm in Greenvale Township, Northfield, the youngest of 8 children, to Carl and Marie (Hanson) Johnson. The farm was eventually sold, and they moved to Dundas. After Joyce graduated from Northfield High School in 1954, she worked as a secretary at the Odd Fellows Home (now Three Links) in Northfield.
A few weeks back, the New Prague Area School Board discussed the notion of once again asking voters to approve some form of levy increase, possibly a blend of levy and capital projects referendum.
The district has had two separate levy requests rejected, a two-part question in 2022 and a levy increase alone in 2023.

Joan F. Kokoszynski (Cleasby) passed away on 05/15/2024, in Winter Park, FL. Joan was born to Ed and Adeline Cleasby in New Prague, MN, on April 10, 1953, and grew up in Lonsdale where she attended Immaculate Conception grade school. Joan went to High School in Montgomery, MN, graduating in 1971, and went to college at Winona State for a few years.

New Prague’s Troy Davis, 8, successfully steals second in game one of the Section 1AAAA championship. The Trojans were able to rally to send the Wednesday evening, June 5, game into extra innings, but the Tigers squeezed out a 3-2 win in the bottom of the 10th inning, forcing a decisive game in the double-elimination tournament.
Game two of the section championship will be played tonight (Thursday) at 5 p.m. (UPDATED) at Memorial Park in Dundas. It was decided to move the time of game two as rain delayed the first game for nearly two hours.
New Prague’s softball team won its first game in the Class AAAA state tournament as the Trojans, the No. 4 seed, defeated St. Michael-Albertville, the No. 5 seed, 5-1, at Caswell Park in North Mankato, Wednesday, June 5.

New Prague’s Orioles and the Waterville Indians will offer their efforts representing area town baseball when TV station Fox 9 brings its town ball tour to Memorial Park tomorrow, Wednesday, June 5.
The behind-the-scenes planning has been in the works for several weeks. Orioles manager Nick Schoenecker received a call from the TV station earlier this spring asking if his team would be interested in the opening round of the station’s seventh annual Town Ball Tour.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation, in cooperation with Scott County, will install stop signs at the County Road 2/southbound Interstate 35 on and off ramps in Elko New Market Wednesday morning, June 5.
Following installation of the signs, westbound and eastbound County Road 2 motorists, including traffic turning southbound onto the I-35 ramp, will stop at the intersection.
Traffic traveling south from the I-35 off ramp to westbound County Road 2 will continue to have a free right.
Rita Ann (Rosendahl) Shimota, age 89, of Hugo, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2024.
She was born May 18, 1934, in Tyrone Township, MN, to Charlie and Dolores and grew up and was schooled in New Prague, MN. She married her husband, Leonard Shimota, in 1954 and they made their first home in Minnetonka. Their new family then moved in 1971 to an old farmstead in rural Hugo.
Preceded in death by her parents; husband of 64 years, Leonard; brother, Richard; and brother- and sister-in-law, Wilbert and Caroline.
Kathleen Mary Hoelz, age 83, of Belle Plaine, passed away on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at Praha Village in New Prague, surrounded by family. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 7, 2024, at Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church in Belle Plaine. Fr. Michael Kaluza will officiate. Visitation will be Thursday, June 6 from 4 -7 p.m.
New Prague’s Karder Schmoll, 14, is called safe at home as he scored the winning run in the Saturday, June 1, semifinal game for the Section 1AAAA baseball tournament. The Trojans, seeded second, won, 2-1, in the bottom of the eighth inning. New Prague had been trailing fourth seeded Rochester Mayo for most of the game. The Trojans will now face number one seeded Farmington Tuesday, June 4, 5 p.m. for the section championship at Dundas Memorial Field.
