Trojans are state champions

The New Prague High School baseball team capped off a great season Friday, June 16, with a 5-3 win over Mahtomedi in the Class AAA state championship game at CHS Field in St. Paul.
New Prague dominated the section playoffs and its first state tournament game against Little Falls Tuesday, June 13, but had to battle back in the semifinal Wednesday, June 14, against Monticello to reach the championship game against the Zephyrs. Friday, the Trojans took an early lead in the championship title tilt and saw Mahtomedi even score, 1-1. NPHS took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning and and then used a three-run fifth to open a cushion before the Zephyrs mounted a last-gasp rally in the sixth inning, cutting the Trojans' lead to two runs. The game ended awkwardly with a runner's interference call against Mahtomedi between first and second bases, sending the Trojans into delirium.
Starting out 9-0, the championship game win capped a 24-3 season where New Prague lost three games between May 4-8 and cruised into the playoffs.
