Leonard Dahn, a farm kid from Montgomery, Minnesota, lived a life built around family, hard work, and a good card game.
Leonard spent his early childhood on a farm in Montgomery and then living in town as a teenager. He eventually moved to Bloomington, where he raised his family. He worked 44 years as a union guy, working in the grocery business as a meat cutter (50 years), before eventually retiring to Apple Valley.
Leonard was a hardworking Dad who could rarely look at something without thinking about how he could make it better. He was handy with just about every tool imaginable and remodeled, and refinished nearly everything in the family home. He built a huge garage and a backyard playhouse for his kids—leaving behind plenty of reminders of the love and hard work he poured into his family. Many family vacations were spent driving across the country or fishing and camping at a local KOA.
Leonard loved a good card game and enjoyed playing 500 with his friends at his condo, in Apple Valley. And even better than that was a good casino run. He had his favorite slot machines and, true to Leonard's nature, a predictable route through the casino floor.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Edna Dahn, and many beloved family members.
He is survived by his children, Brenda Shearer (Jeff), Vicky Burkhalter (Darrel), and Christopher Dahn (Hope); and his eight grandchildren, Kendall, Jared, Blane, Brayden, Breanna, Brynn, Kaleb, and Kayden. In addition, Leonard is survived by his siblings, Shirley Choudek, Marvin Dahn (Sharon) and Alvin Dahn.
Leonard's family will remember him for his hard work, competitive spirit, and unmistakable way of doing things. Most of all, his family will remember him as Dad and Grandpa who loved his family deeply.
Leonard will be missed by all who loved him. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories, stories, and laughter —and probably, somewhere, he's already found the best seat at the card table.
Leonard’s Celebration of Life will be on Sun, Sept 13, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the American Bar and Grill (aka The Legion, enter the door via 2nd Ave), 102 Elm Ave SW, Montgomery, MN 56069.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Memorial Blood Center. Even better, donate blood, in Leonard's memory.
