Mallards fly out of Webster with an extra-inning win

Montgomery’s town baseball team must not mind playing in the heat.
On the hottest day of the summer, the Mallards decided to play extra innings, coming through late with four runs in the top of the 11th and a 5-1 win at Webster Sunday, June 22.
Despite banging out 15 hits, the Montgomery hitters stranded 14 runners making the pitchers the stars of the show. Ted Christian worked the first 5 1/3 innings, giving up only five hits and one run and Nolan Readmond getting the win in relief, working 5 2/3 innings allowing just one hit and no runs.
Trailing 1-0 after six innings, the Mallards knotted things in the seventh when Chris Johnson led off with a single, a Dawson Pint sacrifice bunt moved him to 2nd where an Aaron Dwyer single to left brought him home. Things remained 1-1 through 10 innings until the Mallards lit up the scoreboard in the top of the 11th.
Dawson Pint walked to start the inning, and advanced to third on an error and Readmond bunt. Pint scored to give the Mallards a lead when Dwyer executed a squeeze bunt. Montgomery added a few more insurance runs on a Kyle Hintz double, Pat Lloyd single and two-run single from Max Krautkremer.
Hintz and Lloyd paced the Mallard bats with three hits each and Krautkremer and Dwyer getting two.
New Prague 12, St. Benedict 6 With the wind blowing out to left at St. Benedict, the Orioles and Saints combined for 18 runs and 32 hits.
Gavin Bergman picked up the win for the Orioles going five innings, striking out eight Saints and giving up one earned run.
The Saints struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first. Derek Albers and Bennett Thurow both singled and then Nick Heitkamp hit a ball that ricocheted off the pitcher's glove and spun away from the second baseman allowing both runners to score.
The Orioles would get one back in the second inning and then use big innings in the third and fourth to take an 8-3 lead. Bergman hit a tworun home run to start of the third inning. Jake Deutsch, Cam Prochaska and Anthony Mader all singled to help the Orioles add to their lead. In the fourth frame, a few walks and timely hits from Simon Kajer and Gavin Bergman added to the O’s lead.
The Saints would chip away at the lead in the fifth inning with hits from Thurow, Heitkamp and Alex Mizak, an errant throw would allow the first two to score. The final Saints’ run would come in the sixth inning with Nolan Eishens getting a hit and stealing a base and then advancing and scoring on two ground ball outs.
New Prague added a few more runs in the latter part of the game thanks to Tommy McBroom. McBroom doubled in the sixth inning and scored on a James Fuerniss single. Mader singled in the eighth and then scored on another McBroom hit. Then in the top of the ninth, McBroom hit a solo shot to center.
Leading hitters for the Saints were Nick Heitkamp with three hits and Bennett Thurow with a single and double.
NP hurler Fuerniss earned the save for the O’s while Alex Donkers took the ‘L’ for the Saints.
St. Patrick 18, Miesville 12 With the wind blowing hard to left field at Bonin Field in St. Patrick Sunday, June 22, the Irish offense took advantage, putting up their most runs on offense this season.
The Irish took an early 1-0 lead in the first, but quickly found themselves down 6-1 after two-plus innings, as the Mudhens hit two- and threerun homers.
But in the fourth, the Irish offense pounded four roundtrippers, from Ryan Friedges, Zak Endres, Hunter Even and Ben Taxdahl to give the local nine an 8-6 lead.
The Mudhens scored three of their own in the fifth to take a 9-8 advantage. In the bottom half, Rob Meidl hit a three-run homer to give the Irish an 11-9 lead.
In the sixth, the Irish scored five more, led by Endres' second homer of the day, this time a three-run blast. The Irish concluded their offensive tallies for the day in the seventh, when Taxdahl hit his second home run of the day giving the Irish an 18-12 lead.
Irish pitchers on the day included Tate Marland, Endres, Hunter Even and Ryan Friedges.
Union Hill 9, Lonsdale 8 The Bulldogs pounded out 13 hits, including six home runs, in a slugfest over the Aces Sunday, June 22, at Don Giesen Field.
Nate Osborne’s home run gave UH a 3-2 lead in the home half of the first inning. The Bulldogs added a solo run in the second before the Lakers tallied four times in the third for a 6-4 advantage. The Bulldogs cut the Lakers’ advantage to 6-5 in the third and the two teams traded runs in the fourth inning.
Two big runs in the fifth inning gave the Bulldogs an 8-7 advantage. Jack Giesen singled and trotted home on Nathan Berg’s third roundtripper of the day. Joe Becker’s home run in the eighth frame gave UH a much-needed insurance run in the eighth before the Lakers added one run in the ninth.
Ross Beumer paced Lonsdale with three hits. He scored three times and drove in four. Jack Skluzacek and Brady Flicek added two hits each. Skluzacek drove in two runs for the Aces.
