There are three tractors in the shed at the Borgmeyer farm just east of the Le Sueur-Rice County line. Each one has a specific job, though the 1968 John Deere 4020’s role is only partially linked directly to farm work.
“It still runs the auger every fall, still pulls things every spring,” said Willie Borgmeyer. He farms 120 acres of corn and beans in Shieldsville Township in western Rice County.
Borgmeyer and his tractor – known as “Family Tradition” – will be one of the competitors at the Le Sueur County Fair, Saturday, Aug. 19, 6 p.m., in the grandstand at the fairgrounds in Le Center. Having won his share of trophies on the diesel-powered green tractor at other competitions, Borgmeyer hopes to do well at the county fair.
The tractor has a special place in the family. Borgmeyer’s late father, Mike, purchased it from a dealership. It’s been a workhorse on the farm for years but more recently has been preserved and spared much field work. It has been refurbished for pulling competitions.
