She knows all about courtrooms and criminal trials. For Brooke Holmes, writing a fictional murdermystery is something new.
Holmes authored the book, “Unjust,” due out later this fall featuring a wronglyconvicted man represented by a Minneapolis attorney performing pro-bono work. The attorney, Jason Mickelson, is working with an attorney from the Exoneration Project, Rachel Nix, and together they try to prove a man is innocent. Naturally, there’s a romantic twist involving the two barristers.
“I’ve always loved writing,” Holmes said. “With law school, I did a lot of writing.”
The story is about a fictional character, Maxwell Williams. He is accused of breaking into the Minneapolis apartment of his on-again, off-again girlfriend, sexually assaulting her and killing her in 1982. But at the time, the science of DNA was four years away from being able to be used in courts. Working with the Exoneration Project, Mickelson and Nix try to prove Williams is not the killer.
“I had to pick a time when DNA was collected but not tested,” Holmes said.
