On Saturday, Dec. 30, descendants of Francis Atherton Bean Sr. and Jr. were in New Prague to meet with the current and future owner of the Bean Mansion at 211 Second St. NW, which has been a home for many families.
Alicia Roufs of local realtor, The Sullivan Group/ReMax Advantage Plus, said while they had the 3,778 square foot house up on the market for $450,000, The Sullivan Group was contacted through their Facebook page by John Bean, the great-great grandson of Francis Atherton Bean Jr., who built the house in 1906. Francis Atherton Bean Sr. founded the grain mill that ran for about a century in New Prague before being closed. Roufs said the family was organizing the visit as a surprise for John Bean’s father, Bruce Bean, his father, Atherton Bean III, was born in New Prague.
Bruce Bean had last visited the house in 2002, when it was in need of repairs. “It’s a lot better now,” he said of the house, commending the restoration work done by Sharmila Tiwari and her family.
He noted besides his father, he believes an uncle and aunt were also born in the house.
