New Prague girls working to build momentum in regular season’s final week
With two regular-season games left to play before the section playoffs commence, the New Prague High School girls’ ice hockey team is working to build as much momentum and confidence as possible before the section playoffs open.
At 3-18-2 overall, the Trojans expect to play a top-seeded team in the section playoffs. Their aim is to enter the section playoffs playing at the top of their game regardless of their opponent.
The Trojans head into the final two games of the regular season off a tough loss and a hard-fought draw where they withstood an onslaught. They faced Orono 15-6-1 overall, 3-0-1 in Metro West games. Tuesday, after the newspaper’s print deadline. New Prague’s regular-season finale is Friday, Feb. 2, 7 p.m., against Chaska/Chanhassen. The Trojans dropped a 4-2 decision to the Stormhawks (5-15-3 overall, 3-4 in Metro West games) Jan. 9 in Chaska.
Trojans 4, Bloomington Jefferson 4 (OT) New Prague withstood being outshot nearly 2-to-1 Friday, Jan. 26, against the visiting Jaguars. Senior Ella Hansen’s four goals gave the Trojans the chance to fight for the win in the additional period.
New Prague goalie Maezie Lock and the defense kept NP team in the game, stopping 66 of 70 shots in the game. As if the rink was tipped toward New Prague, the Trojans were outshot 28-17 in the third period and overtime.
New Prague held a 2-1 lead early in the second period thanks to a pair of goals by Ella Hansen (from Makayla Prochaska and Sophie Baker), one in the first period and later in the second, from Prochaska and Nola Yochim.
