With two players ill and a third player nursing a bad ankle the Tri-City United girls basketball team went into their Section 2AA, North Sub-Section playoff game Tuesday, Feb. 28 not at full strength.

Belle Plaine took advantage of the absences and defeated the Titans, 43-33, ending TCU’s season.

“We picked a bad night to not shoot very well...add this to the 23 turnovers and you get a recipe for disaster!  We came into this game not at 100 percent and really needed help from the bench to be able to get this win,” head coach Don Marcussen said. “All of this put a lot more stress on the second unit to step up their game and carry us tonight. We were 0-of-5 from the 3 pt. line and 0-of-6 from the free throw line in the first half, along with 12 turnovers and I still felt we were in this game only being down 23-12. We knew that we had to pick up the offense and do a better job taking care of the ball.”

Marcussen said his team was able to cut the Belle Plaine lead to six points at one time.
“Although we did shoot better the second half, we still had another 11 turnovers and only got to the FT line a total of nine times. We looked very tight and a little scared to start with and this is not something that I was expecting,” Marcussen added. “We played two good games the week before against two pretty good teams and did fine. I guess the playoffs made things a little too big for them at times.”
