The City of Montgomery recognized and honored a late police officer Monday by formally retiring his badge number and presenting the proclamation to his widow.

In a special ceremony during the monthly City Council meeting, Mayor Tom Eisert and Police Chief Nathan Hintz made the presentation to Annalee Tupy, widow of Officer Bryan Tupy, who unexpectedly passed away on July 26, 2021.

Before they presented the framed proclamation, Eisert read the official document.

He said Bryan has served the Montgomery Police Department with honor and distinction from October 2019 to July 2021, and that he was well-respected in the department and community.

“Officer Bryan Tupy was a good friend and colleague whose smile and sense of humor helped to ease the stress of the job,” Eisert stated. “The Department and Community will miss his professionalism, smile, energy and compassion. Be it resolved by the City Council of Montgomery that badge number 608 hereby be retired and never to be issued again in honor of Officer Bryan Tupy.”

Holding their son, Desmond, Annalee accepted the proclamation with tears and said, “Thank you very much.”

In other business, Fire Chief Kenny Pavek reported his department has successfully tapped into well number 3 for a water supply while the city’s water tower is being worked on.

Previously, engineers had told the council residents and consequently, the fire department would experience lower water pressure due to the tower being offline for up to 12 weeks. Pavek said tapping into the well allows his department to fill tankers adequately for fire suppression.

He added that firefighters have already tested the well’s supply to ensure it will work.

“We’re sitting pretty good for water supply,” he said. “This allows us to sleep well.”

The council also approved the purchase of a 2007 Rescue Truck for the fire department. The cost is $69,500, and the truck will be delivered from T-Line Emergency Vehicles in Grand Ledge, MI. The department's current vehicle, which is used for medical calls and extrication from car accidents, is from 1999 or 2000. The council’s action declared it a surplus to be auctioned. Pavek said they are expecting to receive approximately $10,000 for it.
