Trojans split dual meets, place 4th at Brainerd

The New Prague Trojan girls tennis team split a pair of dual meets last week, losing to Chanhassen and defeating Holy Family Catholic. The team placed fourth at the Brainerd Invitational Saturday, Sept. 7.

New Prague’s meet with Mankato East on Monday, Sept. 9, was postponed due to rain. The Trojans were scheduled to compete at Orono Tuesday, Sept. 10, then host Delano Tuesday, Sept. 17. New Prague faces Hutchinson at home on Thursday, Sept. 19.

Storm 4, Trojans 3 New Prague swept the doubles matches, but was unable to take a win in singles and lost to Chanhassen 4-3 Wednesday, Sept. 4. Emily Russo and Sarah Berg won their match at No. 1 doubles in three sets, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 10-7. Maddie Dorner and Maggie Nielsen won at No. 2 doubles in straight sets, 6- 2, 6-1, and Rachel Russo and Brenna Solheid won in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 10-2. Losing in singles were Kianna Howard, Libby Hummel, Ashley Hanson and Carly Gothberg, all in straight sets.

Trojans 4, Fire 3 New Prague again dominated in doubles, with Emily Russo/Berg coming back from a first set loss to win 0-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. Dorner and Nielsen won 7-5, 6-2 and Solheid/Rachel Russo won 6-1, 6-4.
