Speaker encourages reclaiming the human connection

The Duck Cup Memorial had speaker Joe Beckman address the teachers of New Prague Area Schools on Thursday, Aug. 26, in the high school auditorium. Beckman encouraged the teachers to reclaim the human connection in their schools.

“There is so much darkness. Never stop being the light,” he told the audience. He related how his first time speaking in front of students didn’t go so well. In front of 400 ninth graders his speech evaporated from his mind. He noticed one student, a blue haired girl, especially didn’t listen. After his speech he saw her with friends, many who also had blue hair, and thought he could go home or try to start a conversation with the group. He tried the harder aspect and soon realized his conversation was a monologue. Before he left, he asked if he could take a selfie with the group. They agreed and he noticed in the photo a hint of smile on the blue haired girl’s face. Beckman said he tries to reach the blue haired girls and adults who may be zoning out. He explained there needs to be a connection between people, especially in schools.

“Human connection matters,” he said to the audience. “It is oxygen for our souls.”
