Claretta Schmitz, 89

Claretta M. Schmitz, age 89, of Montgomery, formerly of New Prague, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, August 16, 2019 at Mayo Clinic Health System Hospital New Prague. Claretta was born on July 2, 1930 in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska to Anton and Christina (Niebur) Dohmen. The family moved to New Prague when Claretta was in 9th grade and she graduated from New Prague High School. She married Richard M. Schmitz on April 25, 1950 at St. Wenceslaus Church and the couple made their home on a farm near St. Benedict where they raised their six children. Claretta was a homemaker all of her life and helped her husband on the farm. After the couple moved to New Prague in 1984, she tended bar at the Pioneer Saloon in New Prague and the Union Hill Bar. Claretta was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and an active member of the Council of Catholic Women at St. Benedict Church. She loved quilting and embroidery and made quilts and pillows throughout her life. A very special gift to her children came the year following Richard’s death when she made quilts and pillows out of his shirts and presented them at Christmas. She and Richard loved to travel to visit their out of state children. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and was an avid fan of All My Children.

Claretta is survived by her children, Dorothy Wagner of Dover, NH, Susan (Harvey) Andresen of Luling, LA, John (Cindy) Schmitz of New Prague, Judy (Russell) Gebhardt of New Prague, Alice (Bob) Nytes of New Prague; daughter-in-law, Shelly Schmitz of Belle Plaine; sisters, Marilyn Odenthal of Arlington, Armella Hinderscheit of Montgomery; brother, Mike Dohmen of West Memphis, AR; Sisters-in-law, Dorothy Dohmen of Montgomery and Marion Dohmen of Monett, MO; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard, on June 22, 2007; son, Roman Schmitz; brothers, Robert, Denny, Ray, and Albin Dohmen; sisters, Rita Wiley and Jane Schmitz.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, August 22, 2019 at 10:00 AM at St. Scholastica Catholic Church in Heidelberg, MN with Father Eugene Theisen officiating. Visitation will take place Wednesday from 4- 8 PM and Thursday morning from 7:30 – 9:15 at Bruzek Funeral Home. Burial will occur at St. Benedict Cemetery in rural New Prague and lunch will follow at the KC Hall in New Prague. bruzekfuneralhome.com
