New Prague’s Charles Borak Post 45 of the American Legion is celebrating its 100th anniversary Friday, Sept. 27, with a celebration at the Park Ballroom.

The American Legion is an organization of U.S. war veterans that was formed in 1919 It was chartered on September 16, 1919, by the US Congress, in the aftermath of “The Great War,” what is now known as World War I. The Legion played the leading role in the drafting and passing of the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, commonly known as the "G.I. Bill." The organization works in many ways, both nationally and locally, to support veterans through lobbying on behalf of veterans and promoting service projects in their communities, not only supporting veterans, but other groups as well.

Locally, the New Prague post has been very active. It has more than 200 members and several members play leadership roles at the District and the Department (State) levels. Mark Dvorak, a member of Post 45, is the current Department Commander.

New Prague Mayor Chuck Nickolay has issued a proclamation commemorating Friday, Sept. 27, 2019, as “Charles Borak Day” in New Prague. He has ordered city flags to be flown at half mast and urges citizens of the community to “remember this gallant young son who gave this ‘last full measure of devotion’ to God and Country.”
