Alfred James (Jim) Snackenberg, 71

Heaven has gained an amazing person.  Alfred James (Jim) Snackenberg, age 71, of New Prague, passed away peacefully with his wife by his side early Sunday morning, August 11, 2019.  He was diagnosed with early onset dementia in 2012 and had resided at Oak Terrace Jordan Memory Care since July 2017.

Jim was born on September 16, 1947 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Alfred and Violet (Ayshford) Snackenberg.  He graduated from Robbinsdale High School and Winona State College.  Jim was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War and served in Korea.  While stationed at Ft. McCoy, Wisconsin, he met Barbara Nordgaard in LaCrosse in 1970 when he asked her to dance.  The instant attraction was mutual and they were married at North Prairie Lutheran Church in Rural Lanesboro, MN on August 28, 1971.  Jim’s bank manager career brought them to living in Chatfield, Fairmont, Blue Earth, Montgomery, and settling in New Prague where he retired from 504 Corporation in Mankato.

Jim & Barb were life partners and best friends.  Jim enjoyed fine dining, fishing with friends, taking road trips, and going for walks with Barb, and had many fun travels throughout the United States with friends.  He was blessed with peace, love, true friends, meaningful work, and was grateful to always had “enough” of everything.  Jim loved being Dad to their daughter, Krista.  He took an active role in her care and she knew she could always depend on her Dad to always be there – daycare chauffeur, coming home from school, attending all activities.  Jim adored Barb & Krista and always put them first.  He will be so missed by so many.  He was so kind and fun.

Jim is survived by his wife, Barb, daughter, Krista (Ryan) Bauers, and grandchildren, Aria, Gabrielle, and Samuel in Duluth.  Also by siblings, Steve (Denise) Snackenberg, Pulaski, TN and Veda (Tom) Lewis, The Villages, FL; siblings-in-laws, Dianne & Lester Dunn and Ardell Nordgaard & Joanne Stebbins of Lanesboro, MN and many life-long dear friends.

Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in New Prague on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at 10:00 AM with Reverend Ben  Hilding officiating.  Coffee hour with visitation will take place from 9 – 10 AM prior to service.  Graveside committal at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston, MN at a later date.
