Shirley Scheffert, 82

Shirley Scheffert, 82, of Montgomery, passed away at her home on Sunday, Nov. 22, 2020 surrounded by her loving family.

Shirley was born on June 19, 1938, in New Prague to William and Helen (Kajer) Svobodny. She was a graduate of New Prague High School and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Mankato where she received her LPN nursing degree.

Shirley was united in marriage to Karl J. Scheffert on May 14, 1960, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in New Prague. Together, they raised five children: Mark, Scott, Mary Kaye, Donna and Susan.

She worked at Coast to Coast Store in Montgomery, Queen of Peace Hospital in New Prague and for Montgomery-Lonsdale Schools where she worked proudly as the School Nurse.

Shirley believed in giving back to her community. She was a member of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church CCW, and a volunteer for the Holy Redeemer Fall Festival, where she sold baked goods and sweets in the Candy Store.

For many years, Shirley also volunteered for Meals on Wheels, at the Arts and Heritage Center in Montgomery, and as an Election Judge.

She loved spending time with the members of the Montgomery Red Hat Society. However, Shirley’s pure joy came from visiting with her family, friends and her grandchildren.

Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, Karl Scheffert; her parents; brother, Dick Svobodny; sister, Mary Jane Svobodny; and step-mother, Mary Ann Slavik Svobodny.
