Polka icon, Montgomery Police Officer Gordon Prochaska dies due to complications from COVID-19

Gordon Prochaska, age 71, passed away at his residence in Florence, Arizona, on Saturday, January 7, from complications of contracting COVID-19.

Off-duty Montgomery Police Chief Nathan Hintz, Sergeant Pete Bulger, and Officer Mike Longbehn escorted Officer Gordon Prochaska’s body home to Montgomery from the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport Jan. 17.

Gordon, affectionately known as “Gordy” by many, was a part-time Montgomery police officer for 33 years, starting in 1989. Gordy also served at different law enforcement agencies around the state simultaneously. He spent 12 years, from 2001-2012, as a full-time officer with the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office, primarily serving as contracted law enforcement for the community of Dassel. Gordy also spent many years working as a peace officer for the Minnesota State Fair, contracting through Ramsey County Sheriff and the St. Paul Police Department. He would also occasionally fill in as an officer for the town of St. Joseph.

Cheif Hintz said, “Gordy worked a bunch of different shifts for Montgomery Police, pretty much whenever extra staffing was required. He very much enjoyed Kolacky Days, being able to mingle with citizens and visitors. Everyone seemed to know Gordy. I was happy to have him in a Montgomery Police Department uniform, and to represent our department and town.”

Gordy also loved to work on, buy, sell, drive, and talk tractors, and loved the Pioneer Power Show in Le Sueur for this reason. He specifically had a love for...
