Joan (Joni) Glynn, 83

Joan (Joni) Glynn, 83, passed away peacefully at home on May 21, 2023, after a long fight against Parkinson’s Disease.

Joan was born on October 20, 1939 to Isidor and Estella (Klinkhammer) Mahowald. Joan grew up in Shakopee and attended Shakopee schools. In addition to school, she helped care for her younger siblings,  tended the large vegetable garden for the family vegetable stand, babysat, and helped her mother clean several businesses so that she could spend more time with her.

She met and then married the love of her life, Frank Glynn, on October 20, 1956. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Topeka, Kansas where Frank was stationed at Forbes Air Force Base. They had five children and met many lifetime friends while there. After Frank’s USAF commitment was served, they moved back to Minnesota and made their home in Montgomery where they were blessed with two more children.

In addition to raising their seven children, Joan held positions at Brinkton’s in Le Center, the Dinner Bell Cafe, Citizen’s State Bank and Green Giant in Montgomery and GE Capital Fleet Services in Eden Prairie where she worked until her retirement.

Joan was a devout Christian and very active in the Catholic Church. She volunteered her time as a communion distributor, CCD & Vacation Bible School instructor, and kolacky baker to benefit Holy Redeemer School while living in Montgomery.

Family was Joan’s top priority. She was a loving mother, not only to her seven children, but to many others in need of a home. She loved fishing and enjoyed cleaning any and all fish, whether she caught them or not. She also played on the summer softball league in Montgomery. She was a talented artist, seamstress, an excellent cook and baker. One of her greatest talents was her quilting. She created many quilts, gifting one to each of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to treasure.

After retiring, Joan and Frank traveled the continental US, Canada, and Alaska in their fifth wheel. They wintered in Arizona for many years, and decided to move to Mesa full-time and later, Apache Junction, where they resided until moving back to Minnesota to be closer to family in October 2021. They lived in Carver until her death.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Frank; children Judy (Dr. Bill) Vollmar, Terry, Rhonda (Al) Gehrke, Angie (Bob) Feneis, Leah, Linda, and Patty Marth; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; siblings Willie (Victoria) Mahowald, Del Reed, Al (Monie) Mahowald, Joe (Rosie) Mahowald and Shirley Geiger; brothers- and sisters-in-law Susie (Lee) Birkholz, Joey Korbel, Jean Rust, Jim (Joanne) Glynn, Ike Carlson, Bernie Krautkramer, Bing Glynn and Pam Weibusch; many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her parents; sisters Rosina and Mary Ann; brothers Richard, Marvin, Isidor and Don; sister-in-law Betty Barlage.

A celebration of life will be held June 22, 2023 at Pax Christi Catholic Community in Eden Prairie. Internment will be at Fort Snelling at a later date.
