Fireworks still expected in area communities

Area residents will still have a chance to celebrate the Fourth of July in 2020. While the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in parades and other activities being cancelled, people will still be able to enjoy a few festivities and see the night sky lit up with a multitude of colors.

Among those still planning celebrations is Elysian, south of New Prague and Montgomery. The Elysian Area Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring fireworks at 10 p.m. on Friday, July 3. The fireworks will be shot off at Tustin Park. There will also be a 10 a.m. dedication for Elysian’s new Veteran’s Memorial, which has been built in the last year and is now completely finished. Plus there will be a Boat Parade at 12 noon on Lake Francis.

On Saturday, July 4, Prior Lake, north of New Prague will hold its annual fireworks, with the display launching around 10 p.m. from Watzl’s Beach in Lakefront Park.

Faribault, southeast of New Prague and Montgomery, will hold its annual July 4 fireworks show at the Rice County Fairgrounds this year. The show will be held around dusk. The Faribault fireworks show at the Rice County Fairgrounds is a change in venue from the usual Alexander Park location. The change is due to the number of trees at Alexander Park posing a problem during past fireworks launches. The decision to switch to the fair grounds was made this past winter.

The Cannon Valley Fair will be putting on its Fourth of July Fireworks and will be held at dusk in Cannon Falls.

Among those that have cancelled programs are the New Prague July 3 Fireworks, the Veseli Lions Club will not be holding its annual Fourth of July parade or fireworks, the Shakopee Mdewkanton Sioux Community’s annual July 4th show and the 2020 North Morristown Fourth of July celebration, which has been an annual tradition for more than 100 years.
