Inspection highlights need for new police station

An inspection by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has highlighted the need for a new police department building.

During the regular council meeting on Monday, City Administrator Brian Heck reported on an OSHA inspection done in late July. While, he hasn’t received the final report yet, Heck said the city will get dinged on a couple of items like training, respirators, and other things that total upwards of $12,000 in fines.

However, he said things could have been worse. He said the inspector walked into the Police Department and was going to write up several violations, but Heck explained that the council had just hired an architect to design a new building.

Because of this, the inspector didn’t include any of the violations.

“They were very clear that the violations would have cost up to $70,000 per violation. Not only would we have had to pay the fines, we would have had to correct the problems,” Heck said.

The inspector asked when the city hoped to begin construction. When the answer was sometime in 2022, Heck said the inspector would like it to be moved up to eight months.

Mayor Tom Eisert said the visit and results highlight the degree of the seriousness for a new building.
