The graduating seniors of the Tri-City United Class of 2019 saw the fruits of their labor during Honors Night on May 15.

Awards, local scholarships and university scholarships were handed out to their recipients by the school counselors as well as other scholarship representatives from the community. Scholarships from local organizations and people totaled approximately $53,900 for students to use at their post-secondary institutions.

Other awards handed out were the senior medals for graduating students who have lettered in their high school career. The Minnesota State High School League recognizes those with the Spotlight on Scholarship Award to students who maintain high grade point averages throughout the time they participate in MSHSL activities. They must maintain a GPA between 3.0 and 4.0. A total of 104 students (78 percent) received the award.

A total of 25 students also received the President’s Education Award which is given by a U.S. President to students who have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. With instructions to “read only and not make copies”, President Donald Trump’s letter was read to the auditorium full of the students’ family and friends.

The students’ scholarships and awards from outside of school and/or from post-secondary institutions were also recognized.

Other awards given out by TCU included the Tri-Artist Award to students who letter in three fine arts programs their senior year of high school. This year’s winners were Elizabeth Christian, Elizabeth Trnka and Andrick Wagner.

The head advisors of the fine arts programs also vote for one recipient to be the year’s female and male Outstanding Tri-Artist of the Year. The recipients were Elizabeth Trnka and Andrick Wagner.

Similarly, TCU recognizes athletes who have lettered in three sports their senior year of high school. The recipients were Samuel Barnack, Matthew Bartholomew, Matthew Feddema, and Nicholas Johnson.

Matthew Feddema was also chosen to receive the Tri-Athlete of the Year Award.
