WEM splits opening six matches, places tied for 3rd in home invitational

The opening week of the volleyball season for WEM saw the Bucs split six matches.

The season started with a match at Class AA No. 3 rated Cannon Falls on Tuesday, Sept. 7. The Bucs entered the contest rated No. 7.

The Bombers swept the Bucs 25-9, 25-13, and 25-13.

Claire Bohlen led the offense with seven kills. Riley Sammon added six kills and Alex Heuss added five. Bohlen also had two block assists.

Mikaya Schuster was 20-of- 21 setting.

Josie Volkmann finished with 40 passing attempts, 9-of-10 serving, and 10 digs.

Grace Baker had 21 passing attempts, and nine digs.

Jordan Green had six digs and was 5-of-6 serving.

Two nights later, the Bucs picked up their opening win of the season and of the Gopher Conference schedule with a 25-16, 25-20, and 30-28 win over the Panthers.

In the third set, WEM came from seven points behind to win.

Sammon had 13 kills, Heuss 11, and Bohlen six.

Schuster dished out 20 set assists.

Baker was 13-of-14 serving with two aces. Rylee Pelant was 8-of-9 serving.

Baker led the team with 26 passes and 16 digs. Bohlen added 16 digs and Volkmann had 13.

Sammon had four total blocks and Alayna Atherton had two.
