Forever remembered New Veterans Memorial is dedicated

Community members gathered under gray skies Saturday morning, September 12, to dedicate the new Veterans Memorial in Waterville.

Pastor David Mumme welcomed everyone to the ceremony and led the group in prayer.

Le Sueur County Veterans Service Officer Mark Roemhildt addressed the crowd, praising the community for working together to raise more than $70,000 and build a beautiful and long-lasting memorial for all veterans, including those whose names appear on the 192 pavers that line the memorial. Howard Lundin, a 1965 graduate of Waterville High School who currently serves as Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Glen C. Turner Post 5833 in Burnsville, reflected on his time in the community and his 39 years in uniform. He shared a hopeful message, reflecting on the significance of the date, September 12--the day following Patriot Day- -and the nation’s promise to our soldiers to never forget.

“Right now, it can be tough to find hope,” he stated. “But things like the creation and dedication of this memorial for our veterans during a pandemic should give us all hope... We’ll get through this difficult time like we have multiple times in history, and we’ll never forget the men and women....
