Delna Mae Spitzack was born on March 16, 1928 to Emil John and Meta Henrietta nee Saemrow Spitzack in Morristown, Minnesota. She attended District 89 elementary school across the road from the family farm and graduated from Morristown High School on May 25, 1945. In addition to helping her parents on the farm, she worked in Faribault at an ice cream parlor and then for three years at the Marshall-Wells Hardware Store before taking a position with the Minnesota Academy for the Blind (“Braille and Sight-Saving School”) where she worked first as Cook and then as Cook Supervisor for 37 years, retiring in 1990. She was a skilled league bowler and was an avid Minnesota Vikings, Timberwolves, and Twins fan. She often visited her sisters in Washington, D.C. and Florida and also traveled internationally to places such as Germany, Greece, Guatemala, and Bermuda. A particular trip of interest for her was a visit to Germany and Poland in the 1990’s to meet Spitzack relatives and to visit the Pommerania region from which her ancestors had emigrated.

Delna was baptized on April 15, 1928 and confirmed on March 29, 1942. She was a very active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Morristown, where she regularly worshiped, participated in Bible study, and volunteered in the Ladies Aid-Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML), Aid Association for Lutherans, and in other capacities. She was able to put her organizational and culinary skills, especially her finesse at pie-making, to good use for many church meals. She also volunteered for Camp Omega and American Legion Post 43. As a 43-year breast cancer survivor, she volunteered for the American Cancer Society in its peer support program, Reach for Recovery, as well for events such as Daffodil Days and the Rice County Relay for Life, in which she took a lap as recently as August of 2019. She was a recipient of the Faribault Daily News “Unsung Hero Award.”

Delna was independent, generous, opinionated, humorous, strong-willed, fun, and fiercely loyal to her family, both immediate and extended. Above all, she was comforted and guided by her confident faith in her Lord Jesus Christ and was eager to serve him and others in many ways. Until a traumatic injury 16 months ago, she lived independently in a small apartment in the historic Baldwin House in Faribault, where she loved to entertain guests.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her three sisters, Luella (and Harold) Ahrens, Doris (and John) Powers, and Viola O’Brien; her brother, Clarence Spitzack; and a nephew, Philip Ahrens. She is survived by a brother-in-law, Kenneth T. O’Brien of Plantation, FL; a sister-in-law, Helen Spitzack of Faribault; a niece, Rebecca Spitzack of Faribault; four nephews, James (and Nancy) Spitzack of Waukesha, WI; Jonathan Spitzack of Brooklyn Center, MN; Mark J. Spitzack of Minneapolis, and Benjamin (and Kimberly) Ahrens, of New Berlin, WI; six grand-nieces, Sarah (and Scott Gustafson) of Waterford, WI; Laura (and Nick) Jasurda of Parker, CO; Amy (and Matt) Meier of Sun Prairie, WI; Eliza Ahrens of Des Moines, IA; Grace Ahrens of Milwaukee, WI; and Claire Ahrens of New Berlin, WI; and five great-grand-nieces and -nephews, Kylie, Kasey and Caden Gustafson; and Logan and Natalie Jasurda.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Camp Omega or The Lutheran Hour.
